Background

Some of Utah’s boldest business ideas are developing in places far from skyscrapers and tech campuses — they’re growing in the heart of small towns, farming communities, and main streets miles from the Wasatch Front.

The Rural Utah Chamber Coalition is at the center of this effort, actively working to strengthen these chambers to equip rural entrepreneurs with the resources they need to succeed. With 31 chambers working together, the coalition provides vital tools, connections, and advocacy to fuel resilient local economies.

Chambers of commerce are member-based organizations that support and advocate for businesses. Beyond hosting networking events, chambers serve as lifelines for small business owners. They offer hands-on guidance, access to state programs, and a strong collective voice in shaping local policy and development.

As 24 of Utah’s 29 counties are classified as rural, these chambers drive innovation in ways that aren’t just helpful — they’re essential. Each chamber within the coalition reflects its community’s unique strengths and needs, playing a vital role in areas where resources can be scarce and connection is central to success.

For instance, the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce in Price hosts monthly luncheons, award events, and marketing support, serving 200+ businesses and helping small home-based enterprises expand through visibility and networking.

In Sevier County, the Richfield Area Chamber of Commerce strongly emphasizes community and economic development with events like “Customer Service Superstar” and “Business of the Month.” Collaborating with the Sevier County Economic Development, they offer business consulting, marketing coaching, and shared resource directories that help local entrepreneurs overcome isolation and thrive.

The coalition helps bridge the gap between rural and urban areas by ensuring small-town businesses can access the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. From workforce development to community branding and grant navigation, these efforts impact the places that need it most.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity’s Center for Rural Development also plays a key role by working alongside chambers to expand rural business services statewide. Together, these efforts are building stronger communities and proving that rural Utah is full of possibility.
