Background

A new offering for Utah’s entrepreneurs was recently announced at Summit, Silicon Slope’s annual event that brings together the state’s leading tech experts to share insights and help build community. Similar to an accelerator, but different in a pivotal way, it’s looking to be a great addition to the state’s startup ecosystem.

Start School is a fee-free, equity-free, pitch-free program that aims to get founders where they need to be without the added pressure of appeasing investors. As stated by its site, “Start School is where Utah entrepreneurs come to learn from the best founders in our state’s history. No pressure to raise money you don’t need.”

Its motto, “for the 99%,” showcases its desire not to create the next unicorn but instead bolster the businesses that don’t always get the spotlight. Built on practical knowledge, it guides with the belief that “if you can’t lead yourself, you can’t lead others.”

Before employing startup tactics and strategies, its mentors focus on the foundation of business — who you are as a person determines what kind of business you’ll build. This allows opportunities to extend to all, meaning no gatekeeping, warm introductions, or needing to know someone who knows someone.

“We accept all entrepreneurs who are passionate about learning, committed to Utah’s long-term success, and eager to be part of the new era of AI entrepreneurship,” the site states. “We don’t filter for credentials, connections, or how ‘good’ your idea sounds. We filter for commitment.”

Its curriculum is not only free, but flexible. All course materials and educational content are available online through the Silicon Slopes Community Hub, so founders can learn at their own pace and revisit lessons whenever needed.

Courses include Getting To Revenue, AI As Leverage, and Growing Without Investors. Along with these insights, Start School entrepreneurs will be paired with a dedicated Mountain America Business Advisor and business account, giving real financial infrastructure and guidance from day one.

Ultimately, Start School’s intentions are straightforward. “Most entrepreneurs have been told there’s only one path when there are actually many. Start School exists to teach the other paths. We believe Utah can lead the way in showing what entrepreneurship looks like when it’s built for humans, not headlines.”
