The Nucleus Institute accelerates Utah's innovation economy by connecting universities, entrepreneurs, and leaders through five core pillars: connections, commercialization, funding, solutions, and spaces. It serves students, researchers, and founders via programs like Talent Hub (mentorship and workforce connections), ProLab (course credit for projects), Catalyst forums (expert networking), Nucleus Fund (deep-tech venture investment), and Nucleus Grow (SBIR/STTR proposal support). Eligibility focuses on university-affiliated innovators and early-stage deep-tech ventures.
Over the past few years, Utah has emerged as a national hub for technology, be it in research, talent recruitment, or industry collaboration. The Nucleus Institute aims to fuel and accelerate this growth through initiatives that bring together universities, entrepreneurs, and local leaders.
Created by House Bill 530, which restructured the former Utah Innovation Lab, Nucleus is tasked with turning Utah’s strongest ideas into real-world impact. The Institute operates via five core pillars: connections, commercialization, funding, solutions, and spaces. Together, they form an integrated system designed to help innovators move from concept to company.
With its connections pillar, programs like its Talent Hub connect students, researchers, and founders to mentors and workforce opportunities across sectors. Its commercialization arm helps transform university research into viable companies, guiding innovators through market readiness, business models, and early investment preparation.
Beyond direct support for founders, Nucleus focuses on strengthening Utah’s broader innovation environment. Its solutions pillar advances long-term initiatives in policy, partnerships, and student experience, helping ensure the state remains competitive as new industries emerge.
In addition to Talent Hub, the institute offers numerous programs, such as its ProLab, which gives top university students course credit for completing short-term projects. Another example is its Catalyst forums, which bring contributors together to share expertise, exchange insights, and shape strategies that drive measurable impact across Utah’s innovation economy.
The organization also works to close funding gaps for early-stage ventures. The Nucleus Fund accelerates Utah’s economy by investing in deep-tech ventures emerging from the state’s universities and research institutions. Along with funding, it offers access to mentorship, commercialization resources, and connects state research to global markets.
Nucleus Grow bolsters Utah’s next generation of deep tech by partnering with early-stage companies to turn exciting ideas into market-ready solutions. It helps companies prepare and submit strong SBIR/ STTR proposals, and hosts regular workshops and one-on-one sessions to help founders understand agency requirements and learn from peers.
Leaders have said the initiative reflects a decisive shift for the state. After decades of building a strong foundation in technology, entrepreneurship, and higher education, Utah is now entering a pivotal moment — one where academic research and industry growth are becoming deeply interconnected.
By uniting these key sectors, the Nucleus Institute is helping shape that exciting transformation, positioning Utah as a global leader in innovation and setting the stage for the state’s next era of economic growth.
